The Hearth is a simple no-frills pizzeria serving wood fired pizzas in Lewes. The menu is limited and the décor very basic but don’t let that out you off. This restaurant was voted by BBC good food as the third best pizzeria in the UK.

Our waitress was a little slow
We stopped at the Hearth one Saturday lunchtime whilst visiting Lewes. The Hearth has an unpretentious canteen-feel to it with basic décor and a retro juke box in one corner.
The pizza that caught my eye was the Aromatic Lamb topped with slow cooked Lebanese lamb and mushrooms, whilst Tim went for a classic Napoletana, which is topped with anchovies, olives and capers.
We both opted for Long Man Brewery’s Long Blonde bottled beer.
The restaurant was quite quiet with only a handful of other tables dining, which made for a nice quiet atmosphere. You can see the chef at work in the open kitchen and the hand-built wood-fired oven.
After a short wait, we had to remind the waitress of our drinks order but she was very apologetic and got them quickly.
The pizzas arrived soon after. Mine was very generously topped with lamb and the first bite resulted in a satisfactory mozzarella-covered chin. The lamb was tender and beautifully flavoured with cinnamon and spices. The mushrooms added a nutty bite to the pizza.
Tim’s pizza was equally generously topped and he noted there was an excellent crispness to the base.
Overall, we were thoroughly impressed with the quality and quantity of toppings and the excellent pizza base. It was excellent value considering the quality of the food and we’d definitely return.
Overall Verdict: 8.5/10
Cost of food: 8” pizzas cost around £7 and 12” pizzas are priced at about £9. Our bill came to £29 for two large pizzas and two large beers.
