Jukes is a Caribbean and soul food bar and restaurant located on Portland road, Hove. The restaurant is inspired by ‘a passion for good music, delicious food and laid back drinking’ and has received some great reviews since opening in 2014 (the rumours of its legendary homemade ginger cake have reached far and wide).
It’s been on our list to try for a while and we finally dined there one Sunday to try their ‘Soul Food Sundays’ roast dinner.

Half and half roast idea for those of us who can’t decide which roasted meat they’d like
Makes a nice change to a traditional Sunday pub roast
The generous portions
We’ve tried to dine here previously and it’s been closed so opening times have felt a bit hit and miss in the past
We dined here one Sunday for the Caribbean Sunday roast. What first struck us was the laid-back casual vibe of the restaurant. The bright walls are decorated with Jamaican music paraphernalia (we particularly liked the Toots and the Maytals poster) and there was a gentle hum of reggae music in the background. There’s a large garden at the back of the restaurant that would be a perfect spot for some rum and jerk chicken on a sunny day.
A large party had pre-booked and we were advised by the waitress that we might have a small wait for our food as a consequence. The staff kindly kept us updated on the progress of our food, which was thoughtful and helped to manage our expectations.
I was immediately drawn to the half and half roast so that I didn’t have to decide between the beef and the chicken. The wait wasn’t long at all and the chicken came tender and nicely flavoured with lots of spices. The beef had hints of ginger and garlic and was deliciously soft. The sides – plantain, stewed red cabbage, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were all cooked well and there was a gentle heat to the gravy that made the dish more interesting than a typical Sunday roast.
We both agreed that the food was great, and combined with attentive service, and an unpretentious environment it’s a winning formula. I just hope that, tucked out of the way in Hove, this family-run restaurant gets the appreciation it deserves.
We’ll definitely be visiting Jukes again to sample the rest of the menu and the famous ginger cake. We’re just waiting for a sunny day to make the most of that garden.
Overall Verdict: 8.5/10
