Update: Since the time of writing, Fish + Liquor sadly closed permanently.
Nestled in the seafront arches of Brighton lies purveyor of gourmet fish and chips, Fish + Liquor. As the name would suggest they have a license to serve alcohol so you can have your fish and chips alongside a beer or cocktail.
With a vintage interior and comic book themed tabletops this seaside venue has a sense of fun and it offers takeaway as well as being a sit-down restaurant. The menu offers the traditional – cod, haddock, battered sausage, mushy peas, saveloys – as well as some slightly more off-piste dishes, cod goujons with lemon mayo and sriracha sauce, chicken breast with chorizo and a ‘sausage and cheese tower’. The fish is caught locally and is cooked fresh (never frozen).
Quirky retro interior
Being able to order beer or wine alongside your fish and chips
Homemade tartare sauce
At £8-£9 for fish and chips it’s a little pricey
The quality isn’t quite up to scratch of the likes of Wolfies or Bankers
I visited Fish + Liquor on a sunny July evening as part of a very large group. We found the vintage interior to Fish + Liquor to be a fun and quirky touch (the 1960’s chairs are originally from Hove town hall, apparently), however, it was a warm enough evening to dine al fresco so we sat overlooking the seafront.
The service was good despite the fact that we were such a big group, we had pre-ordered our food and it arrived quickly and with a smile. I had the line-caught cod with chips and was very impressed with the quality of the food, the ‘chippy’ chips were spot on – not too soggy and not over-crunchy. The cod tasted fresh and flaked nicely and the grilled lemon on the side was a nice aesthetic touch. The home-made tartare sauce had the perfect balance of capers and gherkin.
We visited this venue at a later date on a busy afternoon in August and I can’t say the quality was as good, so there seems to be an issue with keeping the quality consistent.
Whilst Wolfies and Bankers remain firm favourites, this is a nice place to try for fish and chips by the sea, if you don’t mind the hit and miss nature of the quality of the food.
