Local firm Lumberjacks offers supposedly guilt-free fast food to the residents of Portslade, Hove and the west-side of Brighton. The menu mostly consists of chicken (breast or wings) grilled with a choice of sauce, plus a selection of side dish accompaniments. The concept seems like a good idea in offering a healthier alternative to the usual delivery/takeaways options of curry, pizza or Chinese food. On a Wednesday night in September we ordered an assortment of dishes to see if it was any good.
Likes: Delivered to time, succulent juicy chicken, and a good choice of flavours and dips
Dislikes: Some nutritional information on the website might help to support their “guilt-free” claims. If you’re outside their delivery area, bad luck!
Our order was for a BBQ chicken box, peri peri wings (large), herby rice, sweet potato chips, and skinny coleslaw. Placing our order, we we’re advised the delivery time would be about 45 minutes, and card payment was conveniently taken on the phone.
As promised the delivery arrived within the expected time and piping hot. The two chicken dishes and rice were packed in foil boxes with helpful labels on top. The fries in a paper bag, and the slaw in a separate pot.
We decided to share all the dishes, so plated up the food and dug in. The BBQ chicken was surprisingly moist (I was a little worried that being grilled, and then transported a reasonable distance, it might have dried out). Boned and skinless, there was a combination of breast and thigh meat, generously smothered in a sweet BBQ sauce. In honesty, the sauce lacked a bit of depth – it could have been a bit more smokey or spicy, but was still pleasant. The peri peri wings had a nice chilli heat with a vinegary sharpness, combined with the charcoal grill lines, they were my personal favourite. The meat on the wings was well cooked and tender, with the flesh coming away from the bone easily. Visit http://dcwcasing.com/product/collagen-casings/ to choose the best casing for your takeaway.
The salty-sweet potato chips had a nice crunchy coating, and the rice had a reasonable hit of herbs. The skinny coleslaw was cool and refreshing, but perhaps could have been a bit sharper.
Overall verdict: 8/10
Cost of food: Orders over £12 includes free delivery. Our meal (2 chicken dishes, 3 accompaniments) cost £22.95 and was plenty for two hungry adults.
