There’s stiff competition in Brighton and Hove for a decent-quality meal of fish and chips. Like many establishments in the area, Bankers Express is committed to sourcing fish only from sustainable sources.
It is the only company in the UK to be awarded the Icelandic Responsible Fisheries Management Award by the Icelandic ministry for Fisheries in recognition of their policy of only using sustainable Icelandic Cod, Haddock and Plaice.
Bankers Express offers a sit-down restaurant as well as a take-away service but we have only tried the latter. It’s sister restaurant, Bankers in Brighton, has a heavier focus on restaurant service.

The quality of the food
The tasteful and minimalist decor
When we visited last, on a Friday night, they had run out of mushy peas, my favourite accompaniment to fish and chips
We visited Bankers Express on a Friday night and, despite the queue of people that it so often present, we were served quickly. We ordered Haddock, John Dory and two portions of chips. I was pleased to see they sold bottles of onion vinegar and so took one of these, and some curry sauce, but was disappointed that they had run out of mushy peas. As far as menu selection goes, they’ve a pretty good choice and offer a good range of gluten-free options on a Monday and Tuesday (gluten free menu here).
The decor is clean, light and airy with white walls adorned with black and white canvases, overall a pleasant environment. The food was served fairly promptly (the fish was freshly fried so around ten minutes for everything to be ready).
The fish tasted fresh and wasn’t too soggy and the chips were just right. I enjoyed the curry sauce and, owing to the portion sizes, we couldn’t finish all of the food.
Although we thoroughly enjoyed the food, and I do think that Bankers Express serves a great fish and chips, the quality and choice for me is always going to be second to Wolfies in Hove (full review here). Having said that it is always going to have the edge over the tourist trap chippies along the seafront that don’t live up to the same standards as Bankers.
Overall rating: 7/10
Cost of food: Fish and chips for two with curry sauce and a gherkin came to around £13.
