Recently opened in West street, Brighton, is the latest branch of UK-based waffle retail chain, Wafflemeister.
Wafflemeister uses dough (as opposed to batter), for its sweet Belgian Liège waffles, the exclusive recipe for which dates back to the 1950’s. Its savoury waffles are made with a sour cream dough for a light savoury finish.
We attended the opening event to assess the menu and sample the offerings. Here’s what we thought and what we recommend trying.
The most surprising thing on the menu?
I was surprised at the amount of savoury waffle offerings on the menu, the salmon & cream cheese, and the ham, cheese & mustard were particular favourites. The pizza-style cheese & pepperoni were also very tasty.
Another surprise was just how soft the waffles were. I was expecting a crunch and for them to be slightly stodgy but the waffles were very light, leaving the emphasis all on the toppings.
What to order?
I would definitely return for the savoury crepes, the New Yorker was delicious, packed with mustard, pastrami, cheese and gherkin.
The cheese, tomato and marmite crepe was also very popular.
And for dessert?
Wafflemeister has an excellent selection if you’re looking for an indulgent dessert. Serving gelato (the pistachio is incredible), thick shakes and waffles topped with a range of sweet toppings. Personal favourites were ‘Strawberry heaven’ (topped with freshly whipped cream, a drizzle of Belgian chocolate fudge and fresh strawberries), ‘Go Bananas’ (similar to the Strawberry heaven but with sliced bananas and chopped nuts) and ‘Cream and cookies’ (topped with cream, Belgian chocolate fudge and mini Oreo cookies).
When to visit?
Owing to the huge range of savoury options on the menu, Wafflemeister is a good venue for a quick-stop lunch, which could be followed by an indulgent take-away sweet treat to take back to the office. Otherwise it’s the perfect indulgent weekend stop for something sweet.
Wafflemeister exceeded our expectations, with more choice than we’d imagined and a soft delicious dough that wasn’t too heavy and filling. Our overall rating is 8/10.
