Market Restaurant and Kitchen Bar opened its doors to Hove in September 2015. The main draw of the menu for us was the comprehensive small plate section, which is designed for sharing. You can opt for dishes ‘from the butcher’, ‘from the fishmonger’ or ‘from the greengrocer’. Within these categories are four enticing dishes priced at between £5 and £10 each.
Formerly Graze restaurant, Market’s design is vibrant and fun with turf outside the venue, an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work, and a distinctly Victorian green tiled look throughout.

We haven’t a great deal of praise for this place but it’s fun look and sharing menu initially drew us in
The service, which, for us, ruined the whole experience
The price, given our experience we didn’t feel that we received good value for money
We really wanted to enjoy this place and had been excited about trying it since it opened last year. We went as group of four on a Friday night to celebrate Tim’s birthday. As the idea is to share a few dishes and order 3-4 per person we decided we wanted to try all four of the meat dishes, all four of the fish dishes and a selection of sides between us all.
After a wait of over half an hour the waitress came over with a dish of broccoli that we hadn’t ordered. Some confusion ensued. We sent it back but by this point were getting really hungry and so we asked for some bread to stave off the hunger and soak up the wine.
Another fifteen minutes later we finally got two of our dishes. Over the course of the next two hours we slowly and eventually received about 80% of our order, the rest just didn’t arrive at all. The waitress kept reassuring us that we’d received everything we’d ordered and then when we pointed out specific dishes like the cod or one of the sides she remembered that maybe we hadn’t actually received that one. I really can’t comment on the quality of the food as the shambolic delivery of it is our most overwhelming memory of the restaurant. Nothing that we ate particularly stood out for us though, most dishes were distinctly average. We received a round of drinks for free at the end of the meal by way of an apology.
Despite genuinely wanting to like the restaurant we all left sadly very unimpressed. Looking at TripAdvisor, it’s clear that some have had a great experience and couldn’t fault anything whilst others were disappointed and, like us, found it over priced. It’s understandable that any new restaurant will take a while to get the processes polished when it first opens but after six months and with a bill of well over £200 we expected a lot better.
Overall verdict and rating: 5/10
Cost of food: Around £50 per head for a meal including wine
