Specialising in craft beers and shellfish, the Urchin pub in Hove opened in February 2015. Since opening we’ve visited on three occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed the food every time.

As the pub grows in popularity it’s getting more crowded – be prepared to be wedged closely in with other customers (or wailing children) whose experience and conversation may encroach on your meal. If you want to avoid this, try opting for a quieter time.
Tucked away in Hove, this is a small pub venue where the smell of shellfish hits you as soon as you enter so if you’re not a fishy fan, this isn’t the place for you.
There are usually 1-2 scallop dishes in the main course list to choose from and also 1-2 mussel dishes. The whole lobster seems a permanent addition to the menu, as are individually-sold oysters. We’ve enjoyed everything we’ve tried here from potted shrimp, to mussels and scallops, we highly recommend the food (a word of warning though, the crab dish comes as a whole crab so be prepared to grapple with it).
Because we love the food here we’re keen to see the Urchin do well but, as it’s grown in popularity, we try to now avoid the busiest periods. We recommend visiting on a weekday evening or weekend lunch to have a more peaceful meal.
We always make the mistake of ordering a side dish each and, as the food is so plentiful, we’re unable to finish all of our food (and, sadly, we’ve never made it through our meal with enough space for the cheese board). We would therefore recommend one side dish to share between two. The scallop dishes are a must if you’re a fan.

Cost of food: Starters range from around £7-£10 and mains range around £9-£14 with the whole lobster being the most expensive thing on the menu at £29.
