Hot cross buns with cheese and bacon might not sound appealing to everyone but I would urge you to give them a go. The sweetness of the bun complements the cheese well (think cheese and chutney) and what dish isn’t made better by bacon? Sainsburys has recently been trying to urge us to eat our hot cross buns with bacon in them, but without the cheese to bridge the gap between the two ingredients I’m not sure it would work (and it’s certainly been criticised in the press).
This article in the Daily Mail goes one step further to suggest that the latest Easter food fad sees hot cross bun BURGERS filled with pulled pork, beef patties and cheese, which have apparently been big in Australia since 2013 and have been made popular by Instagram. Meanwhile, celebrity chef Phil Vickery has been serving his hot cross buns with marmalade, bacon and peanut butter. What next?
For now, we’ll be sticking to cheese and bacon and if you’re not brave enough to go the whole hog, at least try them with melted cheese.
